Q & A
Why did you choose your profession?
I discovered the TRS-80 Model I computer when I was about 14 years old in middle school. I spent many hours before and after school writing programs that made the computer calculate fractal math equations, play chess, and speak sentences with near-lifelike human mimicry. I could not afford to buy my own computer so I got a job at Radio Shack working for free until I turned 16 all the while continuing my computer and electronics education during every minute available to me in the store. I was gifted my very own IBM PC/XT computer during high school and with its US Robotics modem opened my view to the world. I operated a bulletin board system (BBS), read constantly, and frequently upgraded my system. I worked for a technology services company selling and installing computers for word processing in the legal field. I designed websites and wrote custom programs and utilities. Eventually, I started my own company building and selling custom computer systems and peripherals.
Who are your main influences?
I prefer to make my own path of discovery. I follow my intuition and try to lead instead of follow others. Having a backup plan is a good idea but I’m very persistent and motivated to achieve my goals.
I admire Katherine Johnson who was an American mathematician whose calculations of orbital mechanics as a NASA employee were critical to the success of the first and subsequent U.S. crewed spaceflights. She had a lust for life and learning which she applied every day breaking stereotypes and bounding barriers in order to excel in her field.
I also admire our 40th President Ronald Reagan. He was constant in his principles but with examination, research, and discussion he was never afraid to change his mind or direction. President Reagan was both despised and admired but he always did what he thought was best for the constituents he represented in the Screen Actors Guild, the military, the State of California, and the United States.
What is your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest achievement is being selected for the rank of Chief Petty Officer after nearly 20 years in the United States Navy. The rating and selection process is completely different from other military branches and exceptionally rigorous; Chiefs are those who have proven beyond a doubt that they are the very model of a United States Navy Sailor. The continuous support of my loving family is an essential part of exceeding in my profession – both in the military and in the civilian world.
What tools do you use?
GRIT- Guts, Resilience, Initiative, and Tenacity. Grit is the mental toughness, passion, and determination to enact your ideals, accomplish your goals, and motivate your colleagues to excel together for common objectives.
The Navy’s core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment are foundational building blocks of everyday life. With Honor, I am accountable for my professional and personal behavior. Courage gives me the moral and mental strength to do what is right. Commitment motivates me to join together as a team to improve the quality of work, appreciate fellow individuals, and value myself.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession?
Never be afraid to change your direction. A certain amount of fortitude is required in any career path but always be observant for a beneficial change, potential opportunity, or new promising path that can be just what you need.
Research, read, and discover persistently. The two constants in almost every industry and profession are continual change and the need to keep up with those changes. Never stop learning.
